William Darwin Brainard

1837-1928

William D Brainard was born in McKean County, Pennsylvania on September 15, 1937, to his parents Aaron Day and Catherine (Young) Brainard. They moved to Winnebago County, Illinois when he was two years old. Before enlisting in the army, he worked as a well-driller across the midwest. He was 26 when he enlisted in Company D, Hatch’s Battalion of Cavalry during the Civil War. While he’s listed as a civil war veteran, his active service was in Minnesota and North Dakota during the aftermath of the US-Dakota War of 1862. He married Catherine after he was discharged in 1866, and they moved to Pope County, MN, shortly thereafter, where they grew their family. He worked as a freighter and served in many local political roles, including city commissioner. He and Catherine were among the first settlers of Pope County, MN, and their homestead was locally recognized as a historic site in 1942.
