THE ROLL FAMILY

Karl Magnus Roll and Karen Oline Berg emigrated from Norway with their four oldest children: Sophie aged 7 years, Ingeborg aged 5 years, Karen aged 2, and Elmer aged 1 year. Karl arrived in New York on April 19, 1892, aboard the boat Ethiopia. It is likely that he came before the rest of the family to meet with his brother, George Roll, who had immigrated a decade earlier in 1883. The rest of the family joined him a year later, arriving in New York on April 24, 1893, upon the boat Circassia. On the same boat were Karl’s parents Elling and Serianna Roll, as well as Olaf and Ellen Hammer, his sister and her husband.

They spent the first several years in the United States living in Minneapolis, MN. The 1895 census shows that the two Roll families lived about 2 miles apart from each other in North Minneapolis. Elling and Serianna lived with George and his young family, while Karen’s brother Christian Berg was living with her and her young family.

ELMER ROLL

Elmer Roll was born on September 27, 1891, in Norway. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1892, eventually finishing all four years of high school in Glenwood, MN. By 1920, Elmer was living in Thief River Falls, MN. He and his wife Cecilia would send postcards and letters to his niece Katherine Hinz. Cecilia died young in January of 1919. At the time of his death in 1945, he and his second wife, Hannah, were living in Grand Forks, North Dakota where he was working as a bartender. There is unfortunately very little that I’m able to find on Elmer beyond this. There is very little reference to him in any records I’ve been able to find, but my grandma Kay saved all the postcards that he sent her during her youth.

JACOB ROLL

Jake was born on November 2, 1894, in Minneapolis, MN. He was the first of his siblings to be born in the United States. He served in the military during WWI as a Private with Company C in the 3rd Pioneer Infantry. He married Carol Ruby Boe in 1927 and worked as a Fish Culturist in a Fish Hatchery for the government in Pope County, Minnesota. By the time of his death in 1966, he was living in Park Rapids, MN, and is buried in Saint Peter the Apostle Catholic Cemetary.

CARROLL CHRISTIE ROLL

Christie was born on April 5, 1896, in Minneapolis, MN. He left school after 8th grade and worked on the railroad before he was inducted into service during World War I. He served as a Private in the army until he was killed in action in Argonne, France during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in which 26,000 American soldiers lost their lives. He departed for the war on June 22, 1918, from Boston, MA, and died between October 8-12, 1918. He was originally buried in Fleville, France before his body was returned home and to be buried in Glenwood Luthern Cemetary.
